FINAL GOODBYE TO SCALTBACK
Pictured are St Phillips ABC (Amalgamated Badminton Club) at their final “farewell party” club night at Scaltback Middle School sports hall after Suffolk County Council’s plans to finally close the site by this Christmas, ready for demolition. This marks the end of an era and fond memories for the two badminton clubs that (and one or two of their longstanding members who) have been playing club and matches there for over forty years.
The club has now moved to their new home at Newmarket Leisure Centre where St Phillips will be joined by Newmarket Badminton Club for a joint club night on Friday nights from 7.30 to 10.30pm which neatly follows on from their “little shots” junior badminton club which starts at 6pm.
The other challenge the clubs faced was finding somewhere else now to play over one hundred and fifty matches with just three weeks notice so, having sorted the logistical nightmare, are grateful to Burwell Community Sports Centre and Ross Peers Sports Centre Soham where they are sharing court time with clubs that already play there.
As well as playing in local leagues from the lower divisions up to a County standard both senior clubs also play in competitions including tournaments in Belgium and are involved with hosting an annual International Team tournament (of over 100 players) which will celebrate it’s 25th year in February 2018.
